Ad leads to misuse of prescription drugs

The Washington Post has showed concern over overuse of prescription drug advertisement. The Post writes about a recent GlaxoSmithKline ad for Requip, a FDA approved medication to treat restless legs syndrome. The ad used words like, ‘it’s frustrating’ and showed a pair legs on the screen. The voice over continues, ‘It’s frustrating. Just when you’re ready to relax, you feel the compelling urge to move.’ Though the ad has been praised by many neurologists and patients because it raised the profile of an under-diagnosed, under-treated condition, they have also been criticized by some critics. According to them,

some fidgety people who simply have a hard time sitting still or twitch a little in their sleep will receive the inappropriate diagnosis of a serious neurological condition requiring treatment with a powerful prescription medication.
