Western reality shows like American idol have always inspired Indian media to make regional versions of them. As the soap operas began to losing its sheen among the households, reality shows have taken their place, which were mainly on music and dance. The Indian audience watched these shows with its mouth agape. Even regional channels began to try their own luck with the reality shows, packed with emotion, elation, desperation and high drama.
But, when an Indian channel, NDTV Imagine, came up with the idea of a reality show in which an actress selects the finalist as her husband, it was a unique one. It was never heard before. In this reality show Rakhi ka Swayamvar(Swayamvar means marriage), actor Rakhi Sawant chose NRI businessman Elesh Parujanwala as her groom. There were 16 contestants, and three entered the final stage. When Rakhi garlanded the 30 year old Elesh Parujanwala, the audience was witnessing a rare scene in the history of television shows.
Well, sometimes, marriages are held in Television. Anyway, breaking the tradition, now western media can make their own versions. Something like- so you think you can marry?
