Winter Olympics: Primetime Underperformance?

Though it was hyped as the next big advertising event after Super Bowl, Winter Olympics does not yield much great news to NBC Universal. Nielsen Media Research rated it third after ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” and CBS’ “Survivor: Panama” and given it one of the lowest ratings in the history of the Winter Olympic Games. The reasons could be ranging from big stars’ unavailability to bigger stars’ flop show, NBC, The number three US network now plans to give away free times or heavily discounted times to advertisers. Some reconstructed deals are on the way.



Analysts like Neal Pilson feel that NBC is actually doing better than its normal primetime offerings.
